President Pratibha Patil recently gave her assent to the long-pending Madhya Pradesh Cow Progeny Slaughter Prevention (Amendment) Bill which proposes seven-year imprisonment for cow slaughter.
The BJP has strongly pushed for a ban on beef. A person guilty of cow slaughter in Madhya Pradesh would be liable to imprisonment for seven years instead of present three years and fined a minimum Rs 5,000 which may be increased by the court.
Radia was in the media glare in relation to the 2G spectrum allocation controversy when leaked tapes of her conversations appeared in the media. Although there was no charge against her, she was named as a witness by the investigating agency.
