RAJASTHAN: Raje bows out as Cong trounces BJP

Jaipur: Twelve BJP Ministers and the State Assembly Speaker Sumitra Singh were among prominent leaders of the ruling party trounced in the Rajasthan Assembly elections as the saffron party was ousted from power in the desert state.

While the Congress managed 96, BJP could only bag 78 of the 200 seats at stake.

Sumitra Singh of the BJP was defeated by a margin of 15,040 votes by her Congress rival Rita Choudhary in Mandawa constituency.

The Ministers who lost were Home Minister Amra Ram Irrigation Minister Sanwarmal Jat, Social Welfare Minister Madan Dilawar, Cooperative Minister Nathu Singh

Gurjar and Kanakmal Katara who held the woman and child development portfolio.

Rural Development Minister Kalu Lal Gurjar, Transport Minister Yoonus Khan and Ministers of state Khema Ram Meghwal and Surender Pal, Urban Development Minister Surendra Goyal and Youth and Sports Minister Pratap Singh Singhvi also lost.

Thirteen of the ministers and two parliamentary secretaries returned to the assembly. Among the Ministers who won were Vasudev Devnani, Gulab Chand Kataria, Ghansham Tiwari and Narpad Singh Rajvir son-in-law of former vice president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat.

Lok Sabha members Karan Singh (Congress) from Behror Shrichnad Kriplani from Chittorgarh and Raghuveer Singh Kaushal both BJP from Anta constituency also suffered humiliating defeats. Only Kiran Maheshwari of BJP won from Rajsamund.
