Badal (Punjab): Two houses, a common wall, but a political divide - cousins Prakash Singh Badal of the Shiromani Akali Dal and Maheshinder Singh Badal of the Congress are set to take on each other in the coming Punjab Assembly polls.
In a battle that has reached and breached families, both Badals will both contesting from the Lambi seat.
While Prakash Singh Badal may be aspiring to dethrone Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh in Punjab, his in-house rival says it’s just a fight between two parties.
“We are opponents, I have got the ticket of the Congress Party and he is the Akali Dal supremo, so it is a fight between the two parties,” says Maheshinder.
Akalis have retained Lambi since 1977 and the Akali supremo, who has defeated Maheshinder earlier as well, plays down the contest here.
“This is not the first time he is fighting against me. What better will he do this time round?” he says.
Spicing up the contest between the brothers is former Member of Parliament Atinder Pal Singh, better known for his alleged involvement in the conspiracy to murder former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
He is in the fray as an independent.
“Both Congress and Akalis are pouring liquor and intoxicants into the constituency and if they stop doing it, all the people here will vote for Khalistan,” says Atinder.
Campaigning has reached its peak in the 67 villages in the constituency, which is just a mirror image of the larger electoral battle for Punjab.
