Two cars packed with explosives found in Surat

New Delhi: The police discovered material for making bombs in two places in Surat city of Gujarat a day after serial explosions in Ahmedabad killed 45 people and injured more than 40.

The first ‘bomb’ was found on Saturday night in a wooden crate opposite Nupur Hospital. Police said it was found to have a wire, some white powder, nuts and bolts as well as a battery—all ingredients for a crude explosive.

A Wagon R car filled with white powder, nuts and bolts and a battery was found on Sunday afternoon in Puna Gam area of the city. The car had been parked on the roadside since Saturday night. Another can, again a red Wagon R, full of explosives was found by the Surat Police at Varachha Road.

Surat Police Commissioner R M S Brar told CNN-IBN the white powder found in the car could be “ammonium nitrate”. Brar has ordered all cinema houses in Surat to remain closed Sunday and asked people to remain indoors.

“If a blast has occurred at one place, it can also happen at another. We are increasing security as we don't want to take a chance,” said Brar.

The civil hospital in Surat too was checked with a fine toothcomb at night and all waste disposal bins were emptied. Police presence has been beefed up in the hospital premises. Police said that many unclaimed two-wheelers and cars were found parked in the city and these were being checked.

Earlier, the police in Ahmedabad defused two bombs. The first bomb was found in Hatkeshwar in Maninagar, Chief Minister Narendra Modi's constituency. A bomb was also defused on Saturday night on Sarangpur Road.

The defused bombs are now the source of vital clues for investigators. Another important clue could be two anonymous phone calls received by a resident of Amreli on Saturday night. Kamlesh Patel says he received a phone call at around 2000 hrs IST from a landline number in Ahmedabad.

The caller reportedly “Ejaz, kam ho gaya hai” (Ejaz, the work has been done). Kamlesh replied in Gujarati and the line was disconnected. He again received a call from a mobile phone at 2040 hrs IST. The same words were repeated and the call was disconnected.

Across the country, state governments put the police on high alert to try to foil more bombings. In Uttar Pradesh, leaves of all policemen were cancelled.

In New Delhi, Home Minister Patil said: "This is the time when we should not allow anybody to make use of these blasts to create more terror and more difficulties.
