Characters with disability have always challenged actors with ability in Hollywood, resulting in outstanding performances.
In 1988, Dustin Hoffman won an Oscar for his portrayal of an autistic person in Rain Man. The film won three other Oscars that year.
In 2001 Sean Penn was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars in I Am Sam for his portrayal of a mentally challenged man fighting for the custody of his seven-year-old daughter.
Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot, played the artist and writer Christy Brown who overcame a devastating case of cerebral palsy. It is said Lewis stayed on his wheelchair even between takes. The result was another Oscar.
In A Beautiful Mind, Russel Crowe got into the schizophrenic mind of math prodigy John Forbes Nash. While Nash went on to win the Nobel Prize, A Beautiful Mind took home four Oscars.
