Click to play videoNew Delhi: The United Arab Emirates has ordered a wage review for its migrant workers with the Cabinet asking the ministry of labour to prepare a proposal examining a wage increase.
The decision comes a week after violent protests by 4,000 construction workers from the subcontinent, demanding better pay and working conditions.
The labour ministry has also re-iterated that it is committed to protecting the rights of workers and that violation of law, presumably by agents and employers, will be strictly checked.
The Indian mission has welcomed the move, describing it as constructive.
On October 31, around 4,100 Indians working in the Jebel Ali Industrial area in Dubai were jailed for allegedly protesting violently for better pay.
But the company has said police in Dubai had filmed some of the workers inciting violence, and those workers would be deported.
The workers were hit by appreciating rupee, high cost of living and low pay which reduced their savings to almost nothing.
According to reports, the Indian Government may negotiate with the Gulf countries regarding minimum wage for workers to find a permanent solution to the problem.
