Kanker: Security forces have begun testing Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) that they plan to use in the anti-Maoist operations. The UAVs are being tested in Kanker in Chhattisgarh.
The Government is planning to deploy the spy drones for better surveillance of Maoist-affected areas in Chhattisgarh, Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.
The UAVs will give an edge the security forces in the dense jungles and help them locate the Maoists and track their movements.
Many security analysts have claimed that the heavy casualties suffered by the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) during the April 6 ambush by the Maoists in Dantewada could have been avoided if UAVs had been used.
The Government also plans to test new Israeli UAVs in the Maoist-infested areas as early as next week. Based on the results, the Union Home Ministry will put three-four more drones for air-surveillance.
The Home Ministry had requested the Defence Ministry to lend them two UAVs controlled by trained Air Force personnel for their anti-Maoist operations in Chhattisgarh.
However, the Defence Ministry has made it clear that the drones would be used only for defensive operations, such as rescue, search and surveillance and cannot be used for offensive operations.
