UGC stands up for Baroda univ dean

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: The University Grants Commission (UGC) has pulled up the Maharaja Sayajirao University for suspending Professor Shivaji Panikkar.

The UGC has asked the university to reconsider the decision. Panikar, the acting dean of the faculty of fine arts, was suspended for allowing nude paintings to be shown at an in-house art exhibition by Vice-Chancellor Manoj Soni, allegedly a Sangh Parivar sympathiser.

Many believe his suspension was an example of saffronisation at the M S University.

The agitation began last month when some BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists led by BJP leader Niraj Jain ransacked the fine arts faculty and one of the final year students named Chandramohan.

The police on Jain’s complaint arrested Chandramohan who was alleged of hurting the religious sentiments of both Hindus and Christians for some of his paintings being put up for “public display”.

Chandramohan was then kept in police custody for six days, which led to protests by students and artists alike.

And while the students and the teachers were demanding that the university authorities lodge a police complaint against Jain for unauthorised entry, the Vice-Chancellor suspended the acting dean.

The university students and teachers are still on protest demanding Panikkar's return to work.
