Ujjain: After a group of ABVP students allegedly beat a professor of the Government Madhav College to death on Saturday, Ujjain has erupted in protests.

Meanwhile, ABVP has condemned the killing of the professor HS Sabharwal.

An eyewitness has come forward to give a detailed on-camera account of the incident.

Govind Kushwaha, the librarian of the college, was with Prof Sabharwal minutes before the professor was killed.

"I was with Prof Sabharwal at a temple when he went to the college gate with some students. Then, after some time a student came rushing to me and told me that some students were slapping the professor. I ran to the spot and saw Prof Sabharwal lying unconscious on a chair with blood all over. We immediately took him to the hospital, where he died," Kushwaha says.

However, he refused to name the accused and said, "Everyone knows who they are. There is no need for me to name them. One thing I can say for sure that no one can take action against these students. Similar incidents have happened in the past too and with me as well. No one bothered. The police, too, let them go due to sheer terror."

At least 22 people, mostly Congress workers, were arrested in connection with blackening the face of a professor, and 12 students owing allegiance to ABVP were accused of rioting.

Ujjain Municipal Corporation chairperson Azad Yadav, City Youth Congress president Ravi Bhadoria, former corporator Yogesh Sharma and student leader Arun Sharma were among 22 people arrested for blackening the face of Prof M L Nath and indulging in "violence" during Ujjain bandh on Monday, police spokesman Rajesh Mishra said. Police had earlier claimed that the bandh was peaceful.

Five ABVP workers were arrested on Tuesday in connection with Prof Nath case and were later released on bail.

Police sources said nobody had been arrested so far for murdering Prof Sabharwal. Students allegedly attacked him for postponing union elections on Saturday.

Teachers of government and non-government colleges here handed over to the police a list of about 12 students naming them as accused in the murder of Prof Sabharwal. State ABVP President Shashi Ranjan Singh Akela, Organising Secretary Vimal Tomar, besides five arrested ABVP workers were among those listed. Most of them have gone underground.

The teachers took out a silent rally and handed over the list to Divisional Commissioner and Range IG on Tuesday. IG M P Dwivedi, heading the CID team, started the probe after offering prayers at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain on Tuesday night.

Professor Sabharwal died of injuries which he sustained after he fell off from the scooter. Postmortem report says that he died due to internal injuries but that was not inflicted by ABVP activists.
