New Delhi: UK's Ministry of Defence has agreed to pay almost £3 million in damages to Iraqis who were tortured by UK troops in Basra in 2003.
The Defence Ministry will provide compensation for the nine Iraqi men who were mistreated and another one who was beaten to death.
A total of £2.83 million compensation will be released for the purpose.
The Iraqis' lawyers and the Ministry of Defence said they were pleased that an amicable deal was reached after negotiations in London. A lawyer for the Iraqis added that the exact division of the compensation would not be disclosed. However, he said that a "substantial amount" goes to the estate of one Mr Mousa, to support his two children and two other people.
In March the Ministry of Defence admitted to breaching human rights of the abused Iraqis.
Then Defence Secretary, Des Browne said the government admitted to "substantive breaches" of parts of the European Convention on Human Rights which protect the right to life and prohibit torture.
