ULFA warns TV channel over news report

Press Trust Of India

Guwahati: The ULFA on Tuesday warned that the Northeast Television channel would have to wind up its operations in Assam if it failed to prove its report - ULFA had taken money from the government to withdraw its call to boycott the National Games - within a month.

In a statement emailed to media, ULFA's "commander- in-chief" Paresh Baruah said the private TV channel would face "dire consequences" if it failed to prove the report telecast on January 27.

The report had said that ULFA had clandestinely accepted money from the government to consider withdrawing its call to boycott the National games, scheduled to be held in Guwahati between February 9-18.

"They have one month's time and if they cannot prove it, the channel has to be closed down and they have to pack up and leave Assam for good," Baruah said.

Assam government spokesman Himanta Biswa Sarma has denied the veracity of the story.

This is the first time that the ULFA has targeted a media house in Assam.
