New Delhi: The Centre will defeat the United Liberation Front of Asom’s (ULFA) conspiracy to split Assamese and non-Assamese people through violence, said Union Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal said on Monday.

"In the last one month, the ULFA has committed violence in upper Assam to create a divide between the Assamese and the non-Assamese and drive away the non-Assamese from there. The Centre is determined to protect the non-Assamese and frustrate ULFA's designs," Jaiswal said in Kolkata.

He said that a sense of confidence would have to be instilled among the non-Assamese people living there. "They should not leave Assam though ULFA is trying to create such a situation," he said.

The state government, he said, was performing its duty and the Centre has extended assistance. The Centre would also send adequate para-military forces to Assam which would hold the National Games next month.
