UN official abducted in Pakistan still alive:

CNN-IBN

New Delhi: Abductors of UN official John Solecki have said that he will be killed within the next 72 hours if their demands are not met.

Solecki is being held captive somewhere in Baluchistan. His kidnappers the Baluchistan Liberation United Front said that they had extended a 72 hour deadline for his execution.

But it is not clear what the new deadline is.

Solecki's kidnappers are demanding the release of 141 Baluch women and children they claim are being held in Pakistani prisons.

They are also demanding information on 6,000 men they say have not been seen since the Pakistan Army's operations in Baluchistan in 2004.

Earlier Pakistan's Geo TV reported Solecki had been killed.

Later a man claiming to represent his kidnappers phoned the Quetta Press Club to say Solecki was alive. He was kidnapped 20 days ago in Quetta and his driver killed.

The antecedent of the Baluchistan Liberation United Front is not known nor whether it is linked in any way to the Taliban.

The group has not so far made any anti-US statements, nor given any indication they are Islamist in orientation.
