Click to play videoUnited Nations: The United Nations is yet to receive a letter from Pakistan seeking inquiry by the world body into the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.
"We have not received any letter," a spokesperson said when asked how Secretary-General plans to proceed now that Pakistan Parliament has decided to seek a UN inquiry.
A Pakistani source said that Parliament had adopted the resolution seeking UN investigation and it would take a little time for the letter to arrive.
Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party has welcomed the National Assembly resolution that was unanimously adopted in the Pakistan Parliament. Bhutto's aides had earlier expressed dissatisfaction over the investigations conducted by the authorities and there was also a controversy over the cause of Bhutto's death.
Once the letter is received, it is expected to be considered by the Security Council which will decide whether to hold the inquiry.
President Pervez Musharraf is opposed to the UN inquiry as, analysts say, it could embarrass him if the findings are different from what the Pakistani investigators and Britain's Scotland Yard have concluded.
The Musharraf regime had accused an al-Qaeda militant Baitullah Mehsud of killing Bhutto but several lawmakers believe that he might not be the culprit and want an independent inquiry into the assassination. Mehsud also has denied any hand in the killing.
