Mumbai: In yet another case of teenage stress and violence, an 18-year-old boy committed suicide in Mumbai on late Wednesday.
“I used to love him a lot as he was my youngest son, what can I say!” says Asaram Pal, as he breaks down.
Vishal (name changed) hung himself from the fan of his room unable to handle the pressure of an English medium education.
"He didn't understand the lectures and he failed the first semester, so in disappointment he committed suicide,” says PSI, Dindoshi Police station, Uttam Abhag.
Authorities at Jogeshwari's Ismail Yusuf College declined to comment on camera but said that in spite of his poor performance they had tried to retain Vishal in the course.
After failing the first semester, Vishal repeatedly approached the college administration asking for a leaving certificate, saying he wanted to quit, but the college administration said that they refused it to him for his own betterment.
Unable to cope with the stress, Vishal ended his life. Vishal is the 5th teenager to give up his life in Mumbai over the last 10 days just last week.
Other cases of suicides
- Fourteen-year-old Gaurang Dalvi hanged himself due to poor academic performance.
- Eighteen-year-old Anu Vishwakarma committed suicide because she was refused a new dress.
- Fourteen-year-old Martand Pujari ended his life at the shelter home he was living in.
- A 12-year-old girl committed suicide after she had an argument with her aunt.
Teenage suicide is a disturbing trend that doctors feel has been triggered by the changing socio-economic dynamics of the city.
"India is moving towards modernisation and there is a lot of competition for the children and peer pressure and parental pressure,” says psychiatrist, Dr Arjun Arya.
The current spate of suicides indicates a deeper problem of teenage dreams battling with the harsh realities of life.
