Indian 'spies' demand recognition

New Delhi: As many as 40 people, who claim to be former spies for India's intelligence services, have moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court demanding that Indian Government acknowledges and compensates them for their services to the country.

One such petitioner is 67-year-old Kashmir Singh, who was recently released after serving more than 34 years in a Pakistani jail. He says he is not happy with the way the Indian Government treats spies like him.

“I ruined 34 years of my life in prison to serve the nation. I hope government will acknowledge the fact and give us the benefits which are given to any Indian soldier,” Kashmir Singh said.

After the Punjab Government announced a relief package of Rs 10 lakh and a residential plot for Kashmir Singh, many others, also claiming to be former spies, say they have not been lucky enough.

One such petitioner, Gurbax Singh, claims that he worked for the RAW. He says life in prison was far better then the one he is leading now.

“I came back in 2006 and was happy coming back to my motherland. But now I am starving because I don't even have enough money to buy food,” Gurbax said.

Human rights activist Atul Lakhanpa says that the government should formulate a programme that would help people like Kashmir and Gurbax Singh.

“We have demanded that they should be taken care of. The government should own and recognise them. Their families should be taken care of because these people spend years in jail. They go through the worst kind of torture in enemy jails. The least that the government can do is recognise them and their services to the country,” Lakhanpa said.
