United Nations slams North Korea's nuclear te

New Delhi: The United Nations Security Council on Monday condemned North Korea's nuclear test as a clear violation of its resolutions.

The Council said that it would immediately begin work on a new legally binding resolution addressing violations by North Korea.

The statement was read by Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin.

The Security Council also demanded that North Korea abide by two previous resolutions, which banned further nuclear tests and also called for a return of six-party talks aimed at eliminating the country's nuclear programme.

The five permanent veto-wielding members of the Council met with the ambassadors of Japan and South Korea ahead of the closed meeting of the full 15-member Council.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said the US condemns the tests carried out by North Korea

"What we heard today was swift, clear, unequivocal condemnation and opposition to what occurred. The meeting was brief and everybody spoke and everybody essentially took the same view. We are now resolved to work on a resolution, we believe it should be a strong resolution with appropriately strong content but obviously unless and until we have completed the process of negotiating that resolution it would be premature to suggest what it contents would be," said Susan Rice, US ambassador to UN.

South Korean Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan blamed North Korea of violating the de-nuclearisation agreement.

"North Korea's nuclear test is violating the de-nuclearisation agreement which North Korea kept until now, and it is nullifying the progress of the six-party-talks till now. Especially, it is in total violation of the United Nations Security Council resolution 1718, so I believe this issue will be discussed revolving around the United Nations," said Yu Myung-hwan.

North Korea carried out its second nuclear test on Monday. The country had carried out its first nuclear test in October 2006.
