New Delhi: Unfinished work at most of the Commonwealth Games venues, unmet deadlines and unfulfilled promises are casting serious doubts about whether the work will be completed before October 3. The deadline of October 3 cannot be changed because the Commonwealth Games begin on October 3.
After several delays the deadline given by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to stop all digging work was July 31 but that looks unlikely.
Delhi is all dug up but the government has an alibi that the city is being dolled up for the biggest event it has ever witnessed. But the question is how long will it take to make Delhi Games-ready?
"By the 30th of July those who need to dig the roads for any kind of piping work they should complete it. Whether it is PWD, MCD or whatever," Sheila had said a few days ago.
The earlier deadline was June 30, and then it was moved to July 15 before it was finally shifted to the end of the month. But have these extra days helped?
The Connaught Place market is still being renovated. The Shivaji Stadium, venue for women's hockey, digging of foundation is still going on. Smiliar scenes can be seen outside SP Mukherjee Stadium, Barapullah Flyover, Sunehri Nala ditto and many other places.
So will the host city be ready, come October? Delhiites don't seem to think so?
"The Games will be a disaster," a group of Delhi residents say.
From June to July to now August, the deadlines are being pushed and pushed even further. But in two months the Games will begin that's a deadline that can't be changed.
