Unruly MPs: It's Somnath vs non-Cong parties

New Delhi: After repeated disruptions by MPs in Parliament, Speaker Somnath Chaterjee may have decided to crack the whip but the decision of referring 32 MPs to the privilege’s committee of Parliament is set to snowball into a major political crisis.

“It is an unfortunate incident. The Speaker will have to take back the ruling,” JD(S) leader Sharad Yadav said.

It’s not only the NDA allies who are facing the Speaker’s disciplinary action, MPs from parties like the SP, BSP and Shiv Sena have also been named by Chaterjee.

It’s an issue which seems to have united the non-Congress and the non-BJP parties in Parliament and Monday morning these MP's and their leaders will meet to decide their future strategy.

The MPs are insisting they have a right to raise issues on the floor of the house and they can’t be named for that. The parties may not confront the Speaker outrightly but are likely to insist upon this in the remaining days of the Budget Session.

“If at all leaders like me and Advaniji should be hauled up,” SP leader Amar Singh said.

It’s not the first time that the Lok Sabha Speaker is finding himself at the centre of a controversy. With such issues it seems the last week of this Parliament session will be as noisy as the first week.
