New Delhi: A train journey that went horribly wrong for over 150 people travelling on the Saryu Express late on Monday night. rThe passengers were sitting on the roof of the train travelling from Allahabad to Faizabad.
A tree branch hit the travellers and the force of collision was so intense that hundreds fell off the moving train. Three people died in the accident while over 150 were injured.
A victim, Sanjay Singh says, "There was no space in the train so we decided to sit on the roof. Over 700 to 800 people were sitting on the roof."
Most of the people injured were students on their way to an Army recruitment rally at Faizabad to be held on Tuesday. The injured were taken to local hospitals in Pratapgarh and Sultanpur.
Rescue work continued late into the night, but the cold weather and lack of proper lighting made the task difficult.
This is not an isolated incident. People sitting on the roof is a familiar sight to Indians and packed trains have led to many accidents in the past.
Just last year, three people died after they fell off from an overcrowded train in West Bengal and railway figures suggest that at least 11 people die from falling off local trains in Mumbai.
But so far, the number of injuries in Monday's mishap is one of the largest.
