New Delhi: Just a day after Sonia Gandhi asserted her right to visit her constituency freely, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati accused her of not looking beyond Raebareli and Amethi.
“I invite all intellectuals to come and see for themselves what work has been done in Raebareli and Amethi in 60 years. And they call it their karmbhumi and home!” Mayawati said intensifying the war of words between her and the Congress chief.
The BSP supremo's attack on the Congress President has got her party furious, so it was a threat for a threat. Party Spokesperson Manish Tewari said, “If she says anything to Soniaji or even a Congress worker we will see to it that her travels across the country is stopped.”
And in this tug-of-war between the two parties, politics in a run-up to elections has fallen back on the old formula – an eye for an eye.
Congress is aware that it may not be able to sustain its battle against Mayawati in the absence of a strong organisation. So, it’s hoping to use the pending cases and projects as a weapon against her.
There are two cases against Mayawati – disproportionate assets case in which the CBI can file a chargesheet soon and Delhi High court is also expected to hear charges of tax evasion on Rs 65 lakh she allegedly received as gifts.
Then there are some Mayawati's pet project awaiting a Central nod – Rs 3,500 crore Taj international airport and aviation hub near Noida is under GOM consideration. Also, Rs 30,000-crore Ganga Expressway project which has yet to see a green light by the NHAI.
But Congress strategists realise that this may not be enough, what is need is to block the BSP elephant's onward march.
Sonia has asked her colleagues to hurry up and stitch up seat sharing with the SP and Ajit Singh has been sent feelers by 10 Janpath not to give up on it yet.
