Bareilly: Seventeen job seekers traveling on roof of a train got killed in Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday. Lakhs of youth had come to UP to attend a recruitment camp organized by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) at Bareilly.
While UP government has blamed the central para military force for utter chaos due to the recruitment drive. Union home minister P Chidambram has hit out at the UP for failing to prevent the situation.
Thousands and thousands poured into UP from at least nine states across the country for an ITBP entrance exam - with no berths or seats most risked their lives.
The mishap occurred at Shahjahanpur after 17 such job seekers on the roof of the train were crushed to death as it passed under an over-bridge. Several were critically injured.
An emotional and uncontrollable mob subsequently set three bogies on fire. The UP government shifting the blame on to the central government said as many as 80,000 job-seekers reached Bareilly on Monday for the exam. It said, their number swelled to around a lakh and a half making the situation uncontrollable.
Braj Lal, ADG, Law and order said, "ITPB did not inform us about the camp or we would have made proper arrangements."
On Tuesday evening, union home minister P Chidambram squarely blamed the UP government.
Chidambram said, "I have got to know about the incident. State chief minister was informed much in advance they should have been informed."
With the ITBP clarifying that they informed the District Magistrate on January 17 about the recruitment drive, it seems the incident is a collective failure by the centre and the state.
