Curfew was imposed in Gorakhnagar area of the town after police lathicharged hundreds of Adityanath’s supporters. Three other places in the city, Rajghat, Kotwali and Tiwaripur, are already under curfew since January 27.
Adityanath and 150 supporters were arrested for trying to visit the areas under curfew, Inspector General of Police (Gorakhpur) V K Verma told PTI. They have been charged with breach of peace.
Protesters have called for a bandh in Gorakhpur and Basti divisions on Monday. Shops and educational institutions are closed and traffic is thin in the city.
Gorakhpur has witnessed violence after a Muharram procession in Khunipur area attacked with stones. Additional Director General of Police A C Sharma said Muharram processions would be allowed but publics figure would not be allowed to enter the troubled areas.
Protesters later burnt a state roadways bus and tried to set a train on fire on Sunday. Shops were ransacked and the District Magistrate’s office was attacked.
