Click to play videoLucknow: UP Chief Minister Mayawati has agreed to allot 189 hectares of land to build a rail coach factory in Rae Bareily, but has accused the Congress of indulging in dirty politics hinting at Sonia Gandhi's recent threat of going to jail if she was stopped from developing her constituency.
Sonia Gandhi may have got the land, but the advantage is Mayawati's.
Announcing a cabinet decision, Mayawati said that she was giving land for building rail coach factory in Rae Bareily but not without taking a dig at Sonia and Congress.
Mayawati said that the Congress did not do any work but do only created drama over the factory issue.
The allocation of land was cancelled by Mayawati a day before the bhumi puja for the factory was to be held by Sonia Gandhi.
Sonia had gone ahead with her trip taken on the local administration by travelling through the disputed area and also threatened to go to jail.
Congress is predictably ecstatic.
Congress media department chief M Veerappa Moily says, “If she (Mayawati) has taken a decision to give back the land, then right wisdom has prevailed upon her and we will come there.”
Meanwhile, Congress should be worried as it failed to build up an agitation to land cancellation, once again revealing the weakness in UP Congress. So, its triumphant look following Mayawati's announcement rings a bit hollow.
Mayawati's given in but not given up on seeking political advantage.
After all she does not want to share the tag of being a development spoiler which Trinamool congress chief Mamata Bannerjee is being accused of.
Mayawati also realises that in national politics, development is an election issue and the BSP supremo wants to share a slice of the development cake.
