New Delhi: President of Uttar Pradesh unit of Congress Rita Bahuguna Joshi was arrested on Wednesday in Ghaziabad district for making allegedly derogatory remarks against Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati.
A portion of her house was also allegedly set on fire by the BSP supporters late on Wednesday night.
Bahuguna has been booked under 153 A (delivering inflammatory speeches), section 109 of IPC (using abusive language), 7 Criminal Law Amendment Act besides SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act.
“The accused will be brought to Moradabad. A team has left for Ghaziabad and Rita Bahuguna Joshi will be brought to Moradabad with the team and will be produced here in the court on Thursday,” said DIG Moradabad, Badri Prasad.
Angry over her remarks against UP Chief Minister Mayawati a group of BSP supporters allegedly forced their way in Bahughuna's house on Wednesday night and allegedly set a portion of the house on fire. They also damaged some property and vehicles in the houses.
"I have also registered a complaint against her (Mayawati) because her partymen have set my house on fire and want actions to be taken against them," said Bahuguna.
“We've acted promptly. Whoever set fire to the house will be taken to task. I'm here now. We will investigate this,” said IG Lucknow Zone, AK Jain.
Defending his party leader UPCC Spokesperson Akhilesh Pratap Singh said that the UP state government has once again taken law in its hand and accused the BSP supporters of ransacking Rita’s house.
“Congress party is still investigating the case but they have come out with any conclusive verdict,” he told CNN-IBN.
“She (Rita) apologised on Wednesday night for what she said in the speech but even then her house was set on fire. If the state government is taking law in their hands then the Congress party will not tolerate it. We will take this matter further and try that the law and order situation in the state is improved,” Singh said.
