Ghaziabad (Uttar Pradesh): On Sunday, about 17,000 aspiring policemen found the question paper assessing their suitability to become constables too difficult.
So what did about 4000 of them do? Well, they went on a rampage damaging public property, dragged women out of cars and molested them.
Aspiring policemen or hooligans? For those out on the streets of Ghaziabad on Sunday the choice was not difficult to make.
Anarchy and lawlessness was writ large as 17,000 aspiring policemen went on the rampage, damaging buses, destroying public property, dragging women out of cars and molesting them and even forcing a train to stop for half an hour.
With policemen remaining silent spectators, the incident has left Ghaziabad residents seething with anger.
An eyewitness Neha Sharma says, “These people are the future of India. We seek help from them but they are doing such silly things. They are molesting girls.”
"At first there was no police presence. They came late and even then, started misbehaving. The lathicharge began only after 20 minutes," another eyewitness Akash Vasisth says.
After being a mute spectator for one hour, the police finally took action and arrested 28 rioters. Asked about the delay, the stock reply was that they were overstretched due to elections.
Ghaziabad ADM S K Singh says, “Yesterday all the forces were busy in election and for these 17,000 aspirants there were forces too but they were not sufficient, otherwise we could have avoid the situation.”
Meanwhile people in Ghaziabad are demanding that an inquiry be setup and the guilty be severely punished.
They are yet to join the police force yet they took law in their own hands. The administration on the other hand was caught napping. This is just a sad reflection of the kind of police force the state will eventually have.
