New Delhi: For almost 48 hours, nearly 500 Uttar Pradesh Police officers tried to catch a single dacoit and he kept them running around in circles.
The police tried everything - setting on fire houses that they thought the dacoit was hiding in and even using a bulldozer to pull down a building, but Ghanshyam Kewat not only kept the police at bay but also managed to kill three policemen and injure an Inspector General of Police and a DIG.
Ghanshyam kept up the resistance till Thursday morning, 0800 hrs IST, even though he had lost one of his guns.
Surrounded now by even more policemen - he made a daring escape at around 1200 noon IST, jumping from the roof of the house he was hiding in even as shots were fired at him.
However, by 1330 hrs IST Ghanshyam's luck ran out. He was finally shot dead by a constable, while trying to escape - much to the relief of an extremely embarrassed Uttar Pradesh Police.
UP DGP, Vikram Singh spoke to the media in Lucknow before leaving for Chitrakoot.
"Ghanshyam was trying to run away from the terrace. Our diligent team followed him and he was shot in an encounter. It is not sure whther he was alone or whether there were more people with him, but the person killed was just one," Singh said.
The notorious dacoit who was killed this afternoon was wanted in 10 criminal cases and had a bounty of Rs 50,000 on his head. Kewat was declared most-wanted when he killed a Special Operations Group officer in Chitrakoot in May last year.
However, what is for sure is that this operation has caused major embarrassment to Mayawati's government and her police force aut the question remains as to why were police sent with less preparation and why did it take them so long to kill a single dacoit.
