New Delhi: The NHRC has noticed the visuals of the alleged fake encounter that took place in Allahabad aired on television channels this week.

It has taken action and has issued a notice to the UP state government. The state government had earlier ordered Crime Branch-CID inquiry.

The video footage showed policemen shooting a criminal even as he offered to surrender. NHRC member Justice Shivaraj V Patil has said compensation should be paid to the family of the victim.

NHRC member justice Shivaraj V Patil said, “Going by the prima facie evidence it seems like culpable homicide amounting to murder will suggest strict action against the erring officers. Compensation should be paid to the victim's family and further prosecution."

Pintu Mishra, the suspect who died was accused of throwing bombs at a policeman and killing him.

The state government had earlier ordered a Crime Branch-CID inquiry.

This is not the first time such accusations of fake encounters are being leveled against the UP police.

NHRC figures claim that in the year 2005-06, 68 out of 109 encounters were fake, a staggering 62 per cent. The state government now says it is taking necessary steps to reform the police.

Former DGP I C Dwivedi said, “"We will institutionalise upholding human rights to."

Inquiry or not, incidents like these highlight the need for implementing police reforms initiated by the Supreme Court.
