Family says BSP MLA got UP engineer killed

New Delhi: An executive engineer of Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) was allegedly lynched by some unidentified persons in Auraiya, about 100 kms from Kanpur on Tuesday night.

The family members of the deceased engineer Manoj Gupta are now claiming that supporters of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Shekhar Tiwari lynched him.

UP Cabinet Secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said that a case has been registered against the BSP MLA and he would be arrested soon.

He also announced that state government will give a compensation of Rs 5 lakh and a government job to family members of the victim.

However, UP Director General of Police Vikram Singh said that it was not clear whether a demand was made for money.

"Shekhar Tiwari has lot of explaining to do. He will be arrested soon. Money angle in the murder case is being probed," said Vikram Singh.

An FIR has also been lodged against two people in connection with the murder of Gupta in Auraiya although the MLA has not been named in the FIR.

Gupta's wife Shashi said that four persons entered their house in Gail Vihar in Dibiyapur late Tuesday night and started beating him up after which he died.

According to Shashi, the two unidentified men were addressing each others as Tyagi and Bhatia, police said.

UP Police say they will investigate the MLA's role in the case.

"In the FIR Bhatia and Tyagi have been named. The role of the MLA is being investigated. We will make the arrests soon," said Braj Lal, Additional Director General (Law and Order), UP Police.

However, it was Tiwari who brought the critically injured engineer to a local police station.

Later the police took the injured engineer to a hospital where he was declared dead.

Inspector General G Kanpur Zone and Deputy Inspector General have reached Auraiya to investigate the matter.

Tiwari is allegedly believed to have demanded a huge amount of money in connection with the birthday celebration of party leader Mayawati from the engineer, who is understood to have turned down the demand.

The allegation that the BSP MLA may have a hand behind the killing of the PWD engineer has also stirred a political hornet's nest.

Rival political parties now allege the death is a result of the ruling party's money mongering.

"I demand that the strongest action be taken against the BSP MLA and his friends under the National Security Act. The Congress party will take up this issue in every forum available to it, on the streets, in court, in the Vidhan Sabha and in Parliament," said Congress leader Digvijay Singh.

Samajwadi Party leader and Mulayam Singh Yadav's brother Shivpal Yadav said Chief Minister Mayawati should be held accountable for the killing.

"They have set a target of collecting Rs 1000 crore. This is the target set by the Chief Minister. This is how they collect. I blame the Chief Minister," said Shivpal Yadav.

The Uttar Pradesh Engineers' Association, meanwhile, has declared an indefinite strike to protest Gupta's killing.
