UP govt orders 30 per cent quota in private sector jobs

Lucknow: After transforming her party from a party of Bahujans to the party of the Sarvajans, Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Mayawati has now played a new card.

While Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had recently urged the private sector to actively participate in nation building, Mayawati has gone a step further and decided to implement 30 per cent voluntary reservation in jobs in the private sector; 10 per cent each for the schedule caste, the OBCs and the economically weak among upper castes.

“According to our policy there will be reservation of 10 per cent for SCs, 10 per cent for OBCs and 10 per cent for upper caste people belonging to the poorer sections of the society,” says Principal Secretary, CM, Shailesh Krishna.

The formula is likely to be implemented in private industries, the service sector, educational institutions, infrastructural firms and disinvested units.

In return, these organisations will receive special grants and aid from the state government.

“The concession is a kind that that includes free lands. The package of concessions will be decided sector-wise,” says Krishna.

Although Mayawati has got the approval of her Cabinet for reservation in private sector, it is still not clear what kinds of concessions or grants will be given to those industries who wish to enter into a contract with the state government.

The government says the policy is being implemented keeping in view the shrinking job opportunities in the government sector.
