UP min asks dowry, calls off son's wedding

New Delhi: Mayawati government is in the news for all the wrong reasons yet again.

Now a Cabinet minister in the Mayawati government is in the dock for demanding dowry and calling off his son's wedding.

The Sports Minister of Uttar Pradesh, Ayodhya Prasad Pal, is now facing an enquiry over allegations that he demanded Rs 50 lakh as dowry for the marriage of his son Om Dutt.

Dutt was engaged to the daughter of a doctor in Chitrakoot in October 2008. But after the engagement the minister's family started backing out.

"It was decided that the wedding would happen before the Lok Sabha election. But till date whenever I have gone to their house no one was ready to meet me," says Dr Prabal Pratap, who daughter was engaged to Dutt.

The girl's family alleges the minister called off the marriage when they failed to meet the dowry demand.

"Later, the groom's mother and sisters told me the marriage will not take place until their demand for dowry of Rs 50 lakh is fulfilled," claims Dr Pratap.

After breaking off his engagement the minister reportedly got his son engaged to the daughter of an engineer in Allahabad.

Pal has denied the allegations, saying it was a mutual decision to call of the wedding and that the allegation is just to tarnish his image.
