Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Assembly on Monday criticised the Lucknow University’s Vice-Chancellor for closing the institute and unanimously adopted a resolution authorising Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to resume the campus.

The university was closed on Friday after a CNN-IBN report that showed how student leaders accused of crimes had been given gunmen by the state government and were using them during their protest against the Lyngdoh Committee's report.

Yadav said Vice Chancellor R P Singh was a "dictator" and alleged that the university was closed to defame his government and spread the "canard" that Lucknow was unsafe.

"What is wrong with the law and order situation in Lucknow? Is it so bad that the university and degree colleges should have been closed?" he was quoted by agencies as saying.

"He (Singh) has ruined the varsity ever since he assumed the charge. This VC is abusing everyone... he is killing democracy. He does not know how to teach."

Yadav alleged that Singh had ordered police officials to open fire on students protesting in the university.

Yadav claimed that the Vice-Chancellor had not told him or senior officials about the situation on the campus. "Why did he not furnish any list of the criminal elements living in the hostels so far?" he asked.

MLAs wanted Singh arrested, but Yadav said that if he did that "you (the Opposition) will rush to the Governor demanding dismissal of our government".

Yadav alleged there was a "conspiracy behind the sine die closure of the university", but did not elaborate.
