New Delhi: A joint team of Delhi and Orissa police have arrested Brijesh Singh, a mafia don and Uttar Pradesh's most wanted criminal, in Bhubaneshwar on Thursday.

Brijesh was involved in a number of extortion and murder cases and carried a reward of Rs 5 lakh on his head.

In 2006, he was named UP's 'most wanted' when the state government increased the reward money on him to Rs 5 lakh from the previous Rs 2 lakh.

Brijesh Singh operated out of Varanasi but had been absconding for almost a decade. Police forces operating in the Purvanchal region (eastern UP) had no clue of his whereabouts.

The 'don' was once a close friend of Mukhtar Ansari, UP's Independent MLA from Mau, before the two became sworn enemies.

An accused in last year's Mau communal riots, Ansari is currently lodged in Ghazipur Jail.

Police recovered a number of incriminating documents from Brijesh Singh, including a fake passport by the name of Arun Singh.

He will be produced in a local court in Bhubaneswar later on Thursday. Police sources said Brijesh Singh has admitted to his involvement in 12 cases of murder and abduction.

"We are in touch with top policemen in Delhi on further action. They have a team there. The Delhi policemen plan to take him on remand to Delhi," Bhubaneshwar Police Commissioner B K Behera said.

Police claim Brijesh Singh had underworld links with Dawood Ibrahim and has about 100 cases of murder and kidnapping against him.

UP Chief Minister Mayawati had also recently alleged that Brijesh Singh was involved in a plot to kill her.

"We were tracing him [Brijesh Singh] from last three years. We got his photograph from some sources. He used to spend his time in Orissa.Yesterday we got specific information and arrested him in Bhubneshwar. On transit remand we are bringing him to Delhi," Joint Commissioner of Police Special Branch Karnail Singh said.
