UP NRHM scam: CAG report reveals shocking details

Lucknow: The state of UP's health has been exposed by a CAG audit of the National Rural Health Mission. The final report, which is yet to be tabled in the UP Assembly, was submitted to the governor on Friday. The CAG has exposed some shocking details.

According to it, over Rs 5700 crore are unaccounted for in the six-year audit period from 2005 to 2011. During this period, purchases were made in violation of CVC norms and guidelines set by the Supreme Court.

Primary health care centres were used to store potatoes and eye care centres were used as grain godowns. For delivering vaccines, the official car of the Shahjahanpur district magistrate was shown as a delivery vehicle.

Nearly 550 health centres that were sanctioned for over Rs 51 crore were never built.

It’s a scam that the Opposition is making political capital of.

Mayawati has, however, chosen to maintain a stoic silence.

While the timing of the leakage of the report is suspect, the report has come as a shot in the arm for the CBI which is carrying on a parallel probe, in a scam that so far involves three murders, five arrests, eight FIRs and plenty of mud in the Mayawati government's face.
