Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government is moving quickly to comply with the ruling of the Election Commission that all elephants in public parks be covered up.
All the statues of Mayawati and supposed BSP symbol, elephant, have to be covered by 5 pm on Wednesday and the task is now becoming expensive and difficult.
The state government is spending as much as over Rs 1 crore on draping the statues.
In Noida, the authorities on Monday ordered 1500 additional metres of pink plastic after they ran out of it.
While in Lucknow, nine life size statues of the UP Chief Minister has to be covered, also 156 elephant statues, in Noida there are 52 statues of elephants both big and small and two of Mayawati that have to be covered as per the Election Commission's order.
Besides these, the authorities will also be covering innumerable elephant shaped door handles, elephant fountains, Mayawati pillars and chakras.
By draping the statues in her trademark pink colour, Mayawati has ensured that even the covered statues establish the motifs underneath them and hence served their purpose.
The drapes will be removed only after the Election results are announced on March 6, but till then, even the covered giants would continue to be a potent debate during the battle for Uttar Pradesh.
