UP set to go for first phase of voting tomorrow

New Delhi: The countdown has begun for the first phase of polling in the battle for Uttar Pradesh. On Wednesday, 10 districts with 55 constituencies in central UP also known as Awadh Pradesh will go to polls.

Amongst the candidates contesting, 109 candidates have criminal cases pending against them. Also 144 candidates out of the total 929 candidates are crorepatis.

The stakes are highest for the Congress, which outperformed expectations in the 2009 Lok Sabha elections with 10 Lok Sabha seats.

In 2007, the BSP cornered 31 per cent of the votes and 30 Assembly seats in the region. The SP was a distant second with 18 Assembly seats, while the BJP and the Congress, each managed four and three seats.
