New Delhi: Five days after the controversial murder of a minor girl in Lakhimpur Kheri, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati finally broke her silence on Wednesday promising stern action.

Mayawati said, "What happened in Lakhimpur is regretful... We are taking strict action. The government is ready for a CBI probe if the family of the victim want it. However, I fear that if the CBI took over the case it would again botch it up like the Aarushi murder case."

Mayawati reacted strongly to the rising demands by the opposition to hand over the case to the CBI. The Congress had earlier attacked the Mayawati government over the murder case and claimed that the authorities were trying to shield the accused and the investigation into the case was a cover-up. They demanded that the CBI should investigate the case and not the UP Police.

"The CBI should investigate the case as the local police will not be able to act against their own," said Congress General Secretary Digvijaya Singh.

The opposition leaders also said that they would go on a nation wide agitation if a CBI enquiry did not take place.

Congress MP Zafar Ali Naqvi said, "If the guilty are not booked, we will begin a nation wide agitation. We need a CBI enquiry to be done. All our leaders will go there including Rahul Gandhi."

The opposition has been keeping up the pressure on the Mayawati government ever since the first post mortem report indicated death by suicide, only to be rejected for the second report which confirmed murder as the cause of death.

"The truth is that the girl was raped and killed. The parents are being, now, bribed and they have refused the bribes. But why is Mayawati quiet? She's a woman Chief Minister, " said Congress leader Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Meanwhile the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had asked the CB-CID to submit its report by the June 17.

Lawyer Prince Lenin said, " There have been manipulations the post mortem reports, which was seen after the second post mortem report was revealed. Now, even doctors have been suspended. Hence, the court had called upon the entire investigation reports to ascertain what can be done."

While the victims family waits for justice, its the political parties who are cashing in. With the national human rights commission meeting the victims family and the Home Minister suggesting the need to re-define rape, the heat is on the Mayawati government to bring the culprits to justice.
