Bulandshahr: Sangeeta, 25, was allegedly murdered by her own family in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh in the name of honour. The young woman was reportedly strangled to death and then burnt for getting married to a boy from a lower caste.

Sangeeta’s mother and three other relatives have been arrested after they confessed to killing her.

“They took her to the village in Bulandshahr and killed her,” said SSP of Noida, A K Singh.

Sangeeta, who was from the Gujjar community and Ravinder, a Jhadav by caste worked together at Mahindra Tech in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, as customer care executives. They met and fell in love three years ago in the same office.

Sangeeta and Ravinder got married at an Arya Samaj temple on February 15, 2010 but continued to live separately out of fear.

On July 11, Sangeeta left her house and came to live with her husband in his home. But Sangeeta's family took her back promising them a grand wedding. Ravinder's family was scared and filed a complaint at the SSP's office.

On Sunday evening, the day they were to get married, Ravinder and his family were told that Sangeeta had been murdered.

“I am scared as Sangeeta’s mother said she won’t spare us. Now, we will have to leave this place, said Sangeeta’s husband Ravinder.

The boy's family alleges that the murder could have been avoided, had the Noida police acted on their complaint.

However, the police have now provided security to Ravinder and his family. Ironically, if this action had been taken before, a life could have been saved.
