House party: UPA gets it from Left

New Delhi: Left MPs on Thursday replaced the BJP as the main Opposition voice in both Houses of Parliament.

In the Rajya Sabha, the Left parties forced an adjournment as MPs stood up and raised slogans against the Government's economic policies and in the Lok Sabha, the Left and Samajwadi Party MPs staged a walk out.

Earlier on Thursday morning, they had demonstrated outside Parliament and once inside had even pledged to forego their daily allowances.

CPM leader Gurudas Dasgupta said, "The Left party MPs will not sign the register of the House on Thursday and will not take the salary following the principle of 'no work no pay'."

He also threatened to take severe steps if the Government did not take note of their demonstration.

"Although we support the Government we are protesting against their economic and labour policies. If the Government fails to learn lessons, then we will call further strikes," he said.

The strike was in support of the nationwide strike called by the Left-affiliated trade unions, protesting against the "anti people" economic policies of the UPA Government.

They say that the the poor continue to be deprived because of the UPA's flawed economic policies.

The MPs were carrying placards with slogans - 'Stop Privatisation', 'Hold Runaway Inflation', 'Stop Disinvestment' and 'Strengthen PDS'.

He demanded that the Government take steps against black marketeers, stockists and hoarders to correct inflation.

CPM Politburo member and Rajya Sabha MP Sitaram Yechury says the strike is meant to pressure the UPA into fulfilling the promises it made before assuming power.

"This strike is to put pressure on the Govt to implement the promises that they themselves have made. In addition, certain issues like price rise, unemployment etc have developed. They require urgent intervention by the Government. The strike is to put pressure on the UPA to take up the matters with the urgency that they require."
