New Delhi: The United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government on Wednesday succeeded in defeated the motions moved by the opposition parties against foreign direct investment in retail and modifications in FEMA. In the motion against the FDI moved by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), while there were 253 votes against the motion, there were 218 votes against the government.
The motion seeking cancellation of FEMA modifications moved by Trinamool Congress MP Saugata Roy was also defeated in the Lok Sabha. While there were 224 votes in favour of the motion, the government managed to negate it with 254 votes.
The highlight of the voting in the Lok Sabha was the walkout by the Samajwadi Party (SP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). The win for the UPA government came comfortably with both the parties walking out of the Lok Sabha before the vote in the House.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi expressed her happiness saying she was not worried about the numbers in Rajya Sabha.
Reacting to the win of the UPA in the House, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said, "The policy of FDI has the approval of the House." UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi also expressed her happiness saying she was not worried about the numbers in Rajya Sabha.
