New Delhi: The Presidential elections have brought the NDA and UPA into open confrontation with each other. It is a campaign no longer just between two Presidential candidates but a stand-off between the two parties.
The BJP’s charges say that the UPA Presidential candidate Pratibha Patil is tainted and that after the Prime Minister, the President's post will be a puppet to 10 Janpath. They also allege that the talk of first woman President is mere eyewash.
Congress, meanwhile, has hit back saying NDA is camouflaging its lack of numbers with personal campaign. They also argue that BJP leader L K Advani was tainted, yet he was the deputy prime minister while Bhairon Singh Shekhawat's saffron slant is obvious.
As a result, the only channel of communication between the BJP and Congress is through press conferences.
“It is up to them to decide how a Presidential election should be fought, not us. We did not do it,” said Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi at a press conference.
“The Congress is now in tension,” said BJP leader Sushma Swaraj at a press conference.
Never before since the Bofors controversy has relations between Congress and BJP dipped to such an extent.
Race for Raisina Hills is offering an opportunity to the two to lash out at each other.
