Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Nitin Gadkari on Saturday took a dig at the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government saying that the most important person in the ruling coalition was the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
In an interview to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, Gadkari said that the BJP would support the Trinamool Congress's (TMC) no-confidence motion in Parliament against FDI in insurance and pension.
Below is the edited transcript of the interview.
Rajdeep Sardesai: What about FDI in insurance and pension? This is the next big issue that the UPA has brought out. Will the BJP provide support because in the past you have indicated that you are ready to support the government on FDI in insurance and pension.
Nitin Gadkari: This government has no moral authority and majority. Now they have lost both the things. This government betrayed the Opposition party because they already promised with FDI in retail to consider views of the stakeholders - the state government and the Opposition parties. But they never took us into confidence. The third important thing is that they are taking up these issues to divert the minds of the people from corruption and scandals.
Rajdeep Sardesai: So you will not support the government on FDI in insurance and pension?
Nitin Gadkari: We don't want to become a part of the Congress party's conspiracy.
Rajdeep Sardesai: You will not, even though you had earlier indicated that you will support the government on FDI in insurance and pension...?
Nitin Gadkari: This government has no moral authority, no majority. First they have to prove their majority in Parliament and after that they are capable of taking any major decisions.
Rajdeep Sardesai: You have made an important point. This government has to prove its majority in Parliament because Mamata Banerjee has indicated that it is ready to bring a no-confidence motion. Will BJP support Mamata?
Nitin Gadkari: Hundred per cent. We will support her.
Rajdeep Sardesai: If Mamata Banerjee brings a no-confidence motion you will support her?
Nitin Gadkari: Hundred per cent, 100 per cent.
Rajdeep Sardesai: And you believe that this government can be defeated on the floor of Parliament...? Mayawati and Mulayam are supporting this government...
Nitin Gadkari: I don't know. There is one formula. The one person who is the most important person in the UPA government is the CBI director.
