Nithari may become big poll issue

New Delhi: After five days of revelation of gruesome killings in Noida, the Central Government has finally woken up. The Centre has set up a high-level enquiry committee to probe the Nithari killings and the alleged dereliction of duty of the local administration.

The four-member team headed by a Joint Secretary in the Women and Child Development Ministry starts investigating the incident.

The team will try to find out methods and motives of the accused, dereliction of duty, if any, by the local administration when the children went missing and recommend ways to prevent such incidents.

"How is it possible that 50 children and odd have been killed – and we don't know if this is the end of the story – and they have disappeared and they have buried and there were so much activities going on and they had gone undetected?" asked Minister of State, Women and Child Development Renuka Choudhery.

But Nithari killings have political implications as well – especially in a state, which goes to polls four months from now.

"It has become clear after this incident that Mulayam Singh Yadav should resign on the moral ground," said BJP General Secretary Viney Katiyar.

Perhaps for the first time after 1992 the state elections would be held out of the shadows of Babri Masjid demolition. And in absence of any emotive issue, the opposition is likely rake up the prevailing law order situation in the state to corner the incumbent government.

The UP government will have a member in the enquiry committee constituted by the Centre. On the question of a CBI enquiry though, UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav still chooses to be non-committal.

"I have no objection if CBI enquiry is conducted," said UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

So, it will not be very surprising if everything in this case becomes politically contentious during the election season.
