New Delhi: The agonising wait for the Uphaar verdict continues. The case was scheduled to be heard in the Patiala House court on Wednesday but the hearing was adjourned till October 22.

“I am disappointed but hopeful that we would get justice some day,” said the wife of a victim, Kanwal Bhalla.

While other relatives of the victims said that they had no option other than waiting for judgment day.

For a decade these people attended court on every single hearing and their only wish was justice for their loved ones who died in the Uphaar cinema hall fire on June 13, 1997. But it seems they have to wait further for the case’s closure.

“The court had its own reason that it needs to go through voluminous records before it gives its judgments,” Defence councel, Manu Sharma said.

But these are mere excuses to victims like Bhalla who lost her husband Indarjeet in the fire. She hoped that on Wednesday someone will be held accountable for her husband's death but that was not to be.

Ten years, 2,000 hearings and then an adjournment, for many it can be a case of so near and yet so far but the Uphaar victims are not losing hope yet.

“We might be disappointed but are hopeful that after this delay the court will deliver justice,” father of a victim Shekhar Krishnamurthy said.

The court will now announce the date of the judgment on the next hearing and the victims hope that this delay will not mean a denial of justice to them.
