Srinagar: The Shopian rape and murder caused an uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Wednesday after Central Forensic Sciences Laboratory (CFSL) reports that DNA samples of the victims had allegedly been tampered with. The report has further puts the Omar Abdullah government in a spot. The case is now likely to be handed over to the CBI.
On Wednesday morning, opposition leader Mehbooba Mufti accused the government of hushing up the Shopian rape-murder case by tampering with the DNA samples.
The accusation forced Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's senior most minister to tell the assembly the case will be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) if the High Court permits.
"We are ready to transfer the case to CBI if the High Court permits us,'' said Jammu and Kashmir Finance Minister, Abdul Rahim Rather.
It comes after the fabrication of key forensic evidence in the ongoing investigation of the alleged rape-murder of two women at Shopian.
A report of the CBI's CFSL have determined that the DNA profile of tissue cells present in the slides -- sent by the Jammu and Kashmir Police -- do not match with the samples from the victims' blood and viscera.
There is also mismatch between any of the DNA samples with those of the four arrested officers and sperms in the swabs. The DNA report has now put the government in an embarrassing position.
"The report has been fudged, the police in Jammu and Kashmir can go to this extent and take the government for granted. This kind of fudging in a high-profile case is unbelievable," said a Shopian resident, Shaheen.
The court, in an apparent snub to the police investigations, indicated they might even get officers from outside the state to probe the case.
"It is another attempt to malign and implicate the police officers, they should look at other angles," said brother-in-law of Superintendent of Police Javeed Matoo, Mudasir.
The DNA analysis reports were supposed to help police investigations to zero in on the culprits of the heinous crime. However, the alleged manipulation of the tests has now further drifted the case away from the investigators. Surely there are more layers added to an already complicated case.
