Bhora Kalan (Gurgaon): Behind the glitter of the malls and the brand new high-rises in the country’s developing suburbs there is thriving poverty and crime. In Gurgaon, Haryana, a gang of criminals, all taxi drivers, murdered passengers and hitch-hikers for money.

The ease with which the gang operated on the highway, undetected for months despite discovery of bodies and missing person reports, has led to an upsurge of anger in the satellite town.

The criminals allegedly offered to drop a person home, strangled him in the vehicle, robbed them and dumped the body in a drain or a manhole.

The five criminals from Bhora Kalan village have now surrendered to the police saying they had murdered and robbed people but their village has disowned them.

Embarrassment is all too visible on the faces of the villagers and they have demanded death penalty for the gang of serial killers.

“If they ever get released, the village will not accept them,” sarpanch of Bhora Kalan, Vijay says.

The family of one of the criminal also condemned the heinous act. "We will accept whatever punishment the Government gives. He should be punished,” father of one of the accused, Omkar Singh says.

However, the police is not willing to talk about the case because the facts are too distressing. Gurgaon's crime graph shows an upward trend when it comes to burglaries, robberies and murders.

Meanwhile, middle-class people like, Sunil Jain, who is the father of one of the victims, says the publicised surrender is a ploy to get a reduced sentence.

“If they (criminals) are saying all this then they are doing drama. They are trying to get the sympathy of the people,” Jain said.

This incident is not an isolated case restricted to Gurgaon, even in Delhi's National Capital Region, like Noida, Ghaziabad and Greater Noida the trend is all too obvious. The Indian suburbs with different socio-economic backgrounds have become increasingly prone to crime.
