New Delhi: The Prime Minister Office(PMO) on Monday sought a report in the incident of a class 5 student of West Bengal's Visva-Bharati university school being allegedly forced to drink her own urine as a punishment for bedwetting. The PMO has also sought action against the accused in the case. A 10-year-old girl was allegedly forced to lick her urine by her hostel warden. The girl alleges that the warden punished her for bedwetting and in a bizarre twist, the parents of the girl were arrested along with the warden for forcing their way into the hostel. They are now out on bail and the judge has observed the police may have been pressured by the Vishva Bharti authorities.
Counsel for Victim's Parents, Mohammad Badre Alam says, “Police did not slap the right sections on the accused."
The University says the student was only threatened by the warden to lick her urine laced with salt as a curative measure, but that she did not actually have to lick it.
"I have the habit of wetting my bed. Sometimes they put salt on it before making me lick it," says the girl.
In its defence, the authorities say they complained to the police because the girl's relatives stormed the hostel premises illegally.
Sushanta Dutta Gupta, Vice Chansallor, Visva Bharti, says, “The warden had spoken to the mother regarding the kids' condition and had asked permission to go ahead with the shock treatment.”
The police failed to explain why they arrested the victim's relatives, even though no FIR was lodged against them. Or why they weren't given bail at the police station and were held at a court lock-up for hours. University officials meanwhile have promised that it will sensitise its employees and prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
