Urmila unplugged for Bas Ek Pal

Aarti Kapur Singh, CNN-IBN

Mumbai: Actress Urmila Matondkar plays a civil engineer in her next film, Bas Ek Pal but who says civil engineers cannot look good? Here’s what she has to say about the film.

Aarti Kapur Singh: There was a whole new look for the film — a new haircut and a whole new wardrobe?

Urmila Matondkar: Yes, but actually that only happened because it was there in the movie and Onir wanted to underline that. The good thing about the movie is that the treatment of the characters is very real. So just like in real life we change our hair-dos and dress up, that’s what’s reflected in the movie.

Aarti Kapur Singh: It’s not a film like the normal breezy romances that one gets to see, it’s film about complex and mature relationships. Is that the reason why you chose to do the film?

Urmila Matondkar: Yes, that essentially is the reason and also that very rarely do you get to see and read about characters that are so real that you feel that you know every one of them. When I read the script I was fascinated by how real each and every one of them seemed to me. That was why I had to play one of them.

Aarti Kapur Singh: What was it like working with an ensemble cast like Jimmy Shergill, Sanjay Suri and Juhi Chawla?

Urmila Matondkar: It was really lovely because none of them were the actors that they are, they really are Rahul, Anamika and Ira and whatever characters they play and that’s come across tremendously on-screen.

Aarti Kapur Singh: So after 12 years in the industry, what are the kind of roles and subjects that attract Urmila?

Urmila Matondkar: Quite honestly, all of them. Whatever appeals to you as an actor and a human being, is always interesting to play.
