New Delhi: The new rule in US allows Americans to legally own guns. The US Supreme Court has struck down the country's strictest gun control law adopted in Washington DC, 32 years ago.
First time in 70 years, the court has addressed the controversial second amendment.
Possession of private handguns is no longer banned and it is no longer compulsory to keep firearms at home unloaded.
A number of civil rights groups welcomed the court's decision but many people including the city mayor have called the decision unfortunate.
The US is estimated to have the world's highest civilian gun ownership rate and gun deaths average eighty a day in the country.
