US: Indian origin student Dharun Ravi found guilty of hate crime

New Delhi: A US court has convicted Indian-born Dharun Ravi for all 15 charges against him - including anti-gay hate crime and privacy invasion.

The Former Rutgers University student was charged with spying on, recording his roommate Tyler Clementi's homosexual activities with a webcam. The incident took place in September 2010 -- soon after which Tyler committed suicide.

20-year-old Ravi faces around 10 years in prison for the 'hate crime'. The sentencing will take place on May 21. Legal experts say that there's also a possibility that he will be deported to India.

Clementi committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge on September 22, 2010, just days after the webcam footage became public.

The verdict by the New Jersey court was announced by jurors comprising five men and seven women aged between 20 to 70 years who deliberated for a total of about 11 hours over the last three days.

Ravi sat expressionless, shaking his head a little, as the jury read out the verdict. After the judge dismissed the jury from the court, a visibly-shaken Ravi looked towards his father and his lawyers.

The case generated immense international interest as it threw light on issues of cyber-bullying and treatment of young gays and lesbians.
